Automatic vs manual Japanese used cars: which to import
By ASTONISHING CARS CO., LTD · Updated 2026-06-11
One surprise for first-time importers is that the vast majority of Japanese used cars are automatic. Japan adopted automatics and CVTs early and widely, so manual stock is comparatively scarce, especially among hybrids and modern family cars.
For most buyers this is good news. Automatics suit city traffic, are easy to drive and increasingly dominate resale demand even in markets that traditionally preferred manuals. The modern automatics and CVTs in Japanese cars are reliable when serviced correctly.
Manuals still make sense in specific cases: rugged 4x4s and pickups for heavy off-road work, markets where manual-trained mechanics are far more common, and buyers wanting the lowest possible maintenance complexity. Manual versions of work vehicles like the Hilux and Land Cruiser are sought after.
If you buy automatic, the key is transmission care: confirm the service history, prefer a clean auction grade, and ensure your local network can service CVT and automatic gearboxes. A well-maintained automatic will give years of trouble-free use.
ASTONISHING CARS can source either transmission to suit your market and use case, verify the gearbox condition and quote a transparent CIF price.
