Best cheap Japanese cars to import under $5,000 FOB
By ASTONISHING CARS CO., LTD · Updated 2026-06-14
A tight budget does not mean a poor car in Japan. The depth of the used market means plenty of reliable, economical models sit under $5,000 FOB, and because they are mainstream they ship, register and resell easily in import markets.
The Toyota Vitz (Yaris) and Honda Fit (Jazz) lead the class: compact, frugal, durable and supported by cheap parts everywhere. Both make ideal first cars, city runabouts and budget taxis, and their resale demand is consistently strong.
For a little more space, the Nissan Note, Mazda Demio and Toyota Passo offer the same low running costs with a roomier cabin. Buyers needing load space on a budget should look at the Toyota Probox wagon, which doubles as a small commercial vehicle.
At this price the key is condition, not specification. Prioritise a clean auction grade, a credible low mileage and a model with abundant local parts, and avoid rare trims or complex options that are hard to service abroad.
Even after freight and duty, a sub-$5,000 Japanese import typically lands in better shape than a comparable local used car. ASTONISHING CARS can shortlist clean units in your budget, inspect them and quote CIF to your port.
