Best Japanese Cars for the Nigeria Market

By ASTONISHING CARS CO., LTD · Updated 2026-02-11

Nigeria drives on the right, so importers should focus on left-hand-drive (LHD) vehicles. While right-hand-drive units occasionally appear, LHD is the practical and accepted configuration for everyday use across the country.

Toyota dominates buyer demand, and for good reason. The Corolla, Camry, RAV4 and Hilux enjoy excellent parts availability and a deep network of mechanics who know them well. Higher-clearance SUVs and pickups suit roads that range from smooth highways to rough, unpaved stretches outside the cities.

Fuel quality varies, so simpler, robust engines tend to be the safest bet, and many buyers favour petrol over more sensitive diesel systems. Strong suspension and good ground clearance pay off given pothole-heavy roads and seasonal flooding in some regions.

On compliance, Nigeria has applied age-related limits and inspection requirements that shift over time, so confirm the current vehicle-age ceiling and documentation rules before buying. As a rule of thumb, many markets cap imports somewhere in the range of roughly 8 to 15 years, but always verify the latest official guidance.
