Best Japanese Kei Trucks to Import for Small Business

By ASTONISHING CARS CO., LTD · Updated 2026-06-04

Kei trucks are Japan's miniature commercial pickups, built to a strict small-size standard yet remarkably capable for their dimensions. They are cheap to buy and run, easy to manoeuvre on narrow paths and ideal for agriculture, market vending and light delivery. For small businesses and farms, few vehicles offer better value per cost.

The leading models are the Suzuki Carry, Daihatsu Hijet, Honda Acty and Subaru Sambar, all proven workhorses with simple, reliable engines. Many are available in 4WD with low-range gearing, which makes them genuinely useful on fields, plantations and unpaved tracks despite their small size. The flat bed and drop sides make loading produce or tools effortless.

Their strengths are economy and access: a kei truck sips fuel, fits where larger pickups cannot, and costs little to maintain thanks to simple mechanics. Payload is modest compared with a full-size pickup, so they suit light, frequent loads rather than heavy haulage. For a small farm or trade, that trade-off is usually ideal.

When importing, prioritise 4WD if you work on soft or uneven ground, and check the bed, chassis and clutch for wear from hard use. Confirm parts availability for your chosen brand locally. A clean 4WD Carry or Hijet is one of the most cost-effective work vehicles a small enterprise can import.
