FOB vs CIF: understanding Japanese car export pricing
By ASTONISHING CARS CO., LTD · Updated 2026-04-15
FOB (Free On Board) is the price of the vehicle loaded onto the ship at a Japanese port. It excludes ocean freight and insurance, so it is the cleanest figure to compare between suppliers.
CIF (Cost, Insurance and Freight) adds ocean freight and marine insurance to the destination port. It is what you actually pay before duties and local clearing.
To estimate total cost, take the CIF figure and add import duty, VAT or GST, port handling and inland delivery in your country. ASTONISHING CARS provides itemised CIF quotes so there are no surprises on arrival.
