How to buy from a Japanese car auction, step by step

By ASTONISHING CARS CO., LTD · Updated 2026-06-08

Most quality Japanese used cars are sold through wholesale auctions, where over a hundred auction houses move tens of thousands of vehicles every week. Foreign buyers cannot bid directly, so a licensed exporter like ASTONISHING CARS bids on your behalf, which is how you access the same deep, transparent supply that local dealers use.

The process starts with your brief: model, year, budget, mileage and condition. Your exporter searches the daily auction catalogues, shares listings with their grades and condition sheets, and you agree a maximum bid for the cars you like.

Each car carries an auction sheet that grades overall condition and maps every dent, scratch and repair on an interior and exterior diagram, along with the verified mileage. Learning to read the grade and the map is the single most important skill, because it lets you judge a car you cannot physically inspect.

On auction day the exporter bids up to your limit. If you win, the price is confirmed and you pay the invoice; if not, you simply try again, with no obligation. Because thousands of cars sell weekly, a missed bid is rarely a problem.

After purchase, the exporter handles inspection, export documentation, transport to port and shipping, then sends you the CIF invoice and paperwork. ASTONISHING CARS guides first-time buyers through every step and explains each auction sheet before you commit.
