How to Convert a Car from RHD to LHD: Cost Factors and What to Consider

Almost every car from Japan is right-hand drive, which is ideal for markets that drive on the left and a consideration for those that do not. Converting a car to left-hand drive is technically possible, but it is a major undertaking that touches the dashboard, steering rack, pedal box, wiring, and sometimes the firewall. Before assuming a conversion is needed, check whether your country even requires it, as many import markets register right-hand-drive cars without issue.

The cost is driven far more by the car than by labour rates alone. A model that was also factory-built in left-hand drive is cheaper to convert because correct parts exist, whereas a model that never left the factory in left-hand form forces custom fabrication that multiplies both time and risk. Steering geometry, airbag systems, and modern electronic safety features all complicate the job and can be difficult to certify afterward.

There is also a quality and resale dimension to weigh. A professionally engineered conversion that preserves the airbags and safety systems is expensive, while a cheap conversion can compromise crash protection and prove hard to register or insure. In many cases buyers find it more sensible to choose a car that suits their market as it is, rather than to re-engineer the wrong one.

Treat conversion as a last resort, not a default. Confirm with your local authorities whether right-hand drive is legal to register, and if conversion is truly required, get a written, itemized quote from a specialist and verify it can be certified before you commit to importing that particular car.
