How to Avoid Fake Japanese Car Exporters: A Buyer's Safety Guide

By ASTONISHING CARS CO., LTD · Updated 2026-02-11

Most fraud in the used-car export trade follows a familiar pattern: an unusually cheap listing, pressure to pay quickly, and a request to send funds to a personal account. A genuine exporter is registered as a company in Japan, can show a verifiable business address, and never rushes you into an irreversible transfer. If the deal feels too good and the urgency feels manufactured, treat both as warning signs.

Start by confirming the company actually exists. Look for a registered trade name, a physical office, membership in a recognized exporter or auction-access body, and a track record you can trace through independent reviews rather than only testimonials hosted on the seller's own site. Be wary of brand-new websites, stock photos used as 'our yard,' and contact details that consist only of a mobile number and a free email address.

Insist on transparent payment terms. Legitimate exporters invoice from a corporate bank account in the company's name and are comfortable explaining each charge: vehicle, inland transport, inspection, freight, and documentation. Requests to split payment across multiple personal accounts, to use hard-to-trace methods, or to pay a third party you were never introduced to are classic red flags.

Finally, verify the paperwork chain. A real exporter provides an auction sheet or detailed condition report, an export certificate of deregistration, and a bill of lading once the car ships. If a seller cannot produce these documents, or grows evasive when you ask, walk away no matter how attractive the price.
