How to avoid scams when importing a car from Japan
By ASTONISHING CARS CO., LTD · Updated 2026-06-08
Most Japanese exporters are legitimate, but the high value and long distance of car imports attract a minority of fraudsters. Knowing the warning signs and insisting on proper documentation protects your money and your peace of mind.
The biggest red flag is a price that seems too good to be true, especially when paired with pressure to pay quickly to a personal account. Genuine exporters quote realistic prices, invoice from a registered company and never rush you into an irreversible payment.
Demand the evidence a real car generates: the original auction sheet with grade and condition map, clear photographs, the chassis number, and a pre-export inspection certificate from a recognised agency like JEVIC or JAAI. A seller who cannot or will not provide these should be avoided.
Pay safely by using a registered company, keeping every agreement in writing, and being wary of last-minute changes to bank details, a common interception scam. Verify the exporter's registration and reputation independently before sending funds.
ASTONISHING CARS operates as a registered exporter, shares the auction sheet and inspection for every car, and invoices transparently so you always know exactly what you are buying and paying for.
