How to Register an Imported Car: A Step-by-Step Guide for First-Time Importers
By ASTONISHING CARS CO., LTD · Updated 2026-02-11
Registration begins the moment your vehicle clears the port, not when it reaches your driveway. Before you can drive legally, customs must release the car against the import declaration, and you must pay any duties, VAT, or excise charges your country applies. Keep the bill of lading, the export certificate from Japan, and the commercial invoice together, because every registration office will ask for some combination of these.
Once duties are settled, most countries require a roadworthiness or conformity inspection. This can range from a simple safety check to a full homologation that confirms the vehicle meets local emissions and lighting standards. Cars built to Japanese specification sometimes need small modifications, such as rear fog lamps or headlight aiming, so budget time and money for a possible second inspection.
With the inspection passed, you submit the paperwork to the vehicle registration authority, which issues a local title and number plates. You will usually need proof of insurance and proof of address at this stage. Translation of the Japanese export certificate is commonly required, and an officially stamped translation avoids delays.
Because the exact documents, taxes, and inspection rules differ widely between countries, confirm the current checklist with your exporter and your national transport authority before the car ships. A short email up front is far cheaper than storage fees while a missing document is sorted out.
