Export certificate and deregistration in Japan explained

By ASTONISHING CARS CO., LTD · Updated 2026-06-19

When a car is exported from Japan it is deregistered from the Japanese system, and the resulting Export Certificate becomes the key document proving ownership and the right to export. It is essential for clearing and registering the car in your country, so it must be correct and travel with the shipment.

The Export Certificate (often called the deregistration or abolition certificate) records the chassis number, model, and details that destination customs use to verify the car. Without it, or with errors on it, clearance can stall and registration in your country may be impossible.

The exporter handles deregistration and obtains the certificate as part of the export process, usually issuing it alongside the Bill of Lading and invoice. Many destinations also require a certified translation, since the original is in Japanese, so confirm whether yours does.

Your responsibility is to confirm which documents your country's customs require and ensure the chassis number and details on the certificate exactly match the car and the other paperwork. A mismatch is a common cause of clearance delay and unexpected cost.

ASTONISHING CARS handles deregistration and provides a correct Export Certificate, with translation where needed, alongside the full document set, so your car clears and registers without paperwork surprises.
