How Vehicle Freight Rates Are Calculated for Ocean Shipping
By ASTONISHING CARS CO., LTD · Updated 2026-01-22
Ocean freight for a vehicle is not a single fixed number but the result of several variables stacked together. The biggest drivers are the route, the size of the vehicle, the shipping method, and the conditions of the market at the time you book. Understanding these helps you read a quote rather than just react to the total.
For RoRo, rates are typically based on the cubic measurement of the vehicle, so a large SUV or van costs more than a compact car on the same sailing. Container shipping is priced per container or per share of one, which is why consolidation spreads the cost across several cars. Either way, dimensions and weight feed directly into the price.
On top of the base ocean rate sit variable charges that move with the market, such as fuel adjustment factors and currency surcharges, plus port and terminal handling fees at both ends. These can change between the time you are quoted and the time of sailing, so a quote always reflects a moment in time. Peak seasons and tight vessel space push rates up.
The practical lesson is to compare like with like: same route, same method, same vehicle class, and ask what is included. Because so many inputs fluctuate, never assume an old figure still holds. Request a fresh quote close to your booking date for an accurate picture of total cost.
