Importing Japanese Cars to Australia: SEVS and Older-Vehicle Pathways Explained
By ASTONISHING CARS CO., LTD · Updated 2026-02-14
Australia manages used-vehicle imports through a national approval system administered by the federal government. In broad terms, a vehicle generally needs an import approval before it arrives, and the pathway you use depends on the car's age, type, and whether it appears on an eligible-models register. Buying first and sorting paperwork later is the most common and costly mistake.
The Specialist and Enthusiast Vehicle Scheme, widely known as SEVS, is one of the main routes for newer performance, niche, or low-volume models. A model must be entered on the register to qualify, so the practical question is not just whether you like a car but whether that exact variant is listed. Many popular Japanese sports and kei models have been considered under this scheme over the years.
There is also a well-known older-vehicle pathway that many enthusiasts rely on for classic Japanese cars built before a particular cut-off period. This route is attractive because it avoids some of the model-by-model eligibility questions, but the vehicle still has to meet entry, quarantine, and asbestos-related import conditions on arrival.
Because the registers and cut-off rules are updated periodically, always confirm the current requirements with the official Australian import-approval system and a licensed customs broker before committing. Treat any age threshold or scheme name you read online as a starting point for your own verification, not a guarantee for a specific car.
