Shared Container Car Shipping Explained: How Consolidation Works
By ASTONISHING CARS CO., LTD · Updated 2026-03-04
Shared container shipping, often called consolidation or groupage, places two to four cars inside a single forty-foot container alongside vehicles bound for the same destination. You pay for your share of the container rather than booking the whole box. It bridges the gap between cheap RoRo and the premium of a sole-use container.
The main advantage of a container over RoRo is protection. Once loaded and braced, the vehicle is sealed away from weather, salt spray, and casual handling for the whole voyage. Some buyers also value that personal items can sometimes be shipped inside the vehicle, subject to the destination country's rules.
The trade-off is timing. A consolidator must wait until enough compatible vehicles are ready to fill the container before it can sail, so departures can be less frequent than RoRo. If your car is loaded first, it may sit while the box is completed. Ask how full the container already is when you book.
Shared containers suit higher-value, lower-clearance, or non-running vehicles that benefit from extra protection, while RoRo often wins on price and frequency for ordinary running cars. Confirm loading method, expected consolidation time, and your share of the cost with a current quote before deciding.
