Toyota Hiace export buyer's guide: the world's favourite van
By ASTONISHING CARS CO., LTD · Updated 2026-06-20
The Toyota Hiace is the single most exported commercial vehicle from Japan, and for good reason. It is the backbone of passenger transport, delivery and small business fleets across Africa, the Middle East and the Pacific, prized for indestructible mechanicals and the easiest parts supply of any van.
Two layouts dominate demand: the long-wheelbase passenger van, used widely as a matatu or minibus taxi, and the cargo van for goods. Diesel variants are the most sought-after in markets with cheap diesel and long distances, while petrol versions suit lighter urban duty.
The H200 generation (2004 onward) is the export workhorse, with the later facelifts offering improved safety and comfort. Buyers focused on payload and total reliability should look for the 1KD and 2KD diesel engines, which have a vast support network of mechanics and spares.
Because Hiace units are worked hard, condition varies widely, so the auction grade and inspection matter more than on a private car. Target a grade 4 or above, confirm a sound chassis and clean service record, and budget for fresh tyres and brakes on arrival.
Demand keeps Hiace values firm and resale strong, so a well-chosen unit is as much an asset as a tool. ASTONISHING CARS sources Hiace vans to order from Japanese auctions, inspects the drivetrain and body, and ships RoRo or container to your nearest port.
