Toyota Hiace vs Nissan Caravan: Commercial Van Comparison

By ASTONISHING CARS CO., LTD · Updated 2026-03-19

VS

The Toyota Hiace is the default people-mover and cargo van across much of Africa, Asia and the Middle East, prized for its toughness, large interior and an enormous spare-parts network. The Nissan Caravan (NV350) is its closest rival, offering comparable space and payload, often at a slightly lower purchase price. Both are body-on-frame-style workhorses built to run for years under heavy use.

Where the Hiace pulls ahead is ubiquity. Almost every mechanic knows it, parts are available even in remote areas, and resale demand is exceptionally strong, which protects your investment. The Caravan is mechanically solid and some buyers prefer its ride and driving position, but parts availability outside major cities can be thinner.

On payload and configuration, both offer panel-van, window-van and minibus layouts, plus diesel and petrol engines. Diesel versions are the smart choice for fleet and long-distance work because of fuel economy and torque. For passenger transport, count seats and check the roof height; for cargo, focus on a flat floor and door access.

For most export markets the Hiace is the safer bet on resale and serviceability, making it ideal if you may sell on later or run a fleet. Choose the Caravan when you find a strong unit at a better price and you have reliable Nissan support locally. Either way, prioritise a clean diesel with documented history.
