What Is a Bill of Lading in Car Shipping? The Document That Controls Your Vehicle
By ASTONISHING CARS CO., LTD · Updated 2026-03-04
A bill of lading, often shortened to B/L, is the master document issued by the shipping line once your car is loaded. It does three jobs at once: it is a receipt proving the vehicle was received in a stated condition, it is the contract of carriage between you and the carrier, and crucially it is a document of title that the destination port uses to decide who may claim the car.
Read the key fields carefully. The shipper is the exporter, the consignee is whoever is entitled to collect the car, and the notify party receives arrival notices. The description should match your invoice exactly, including chassis number, make, model, and color, because a mismatch can freeze the cargo until it is corrected.
There are two common forms you will encounter. An original B/L is a paper document that must be physically surrendered at destination to release the car, while a telex release or sea waybill lets the line release the car electronically without the paper. Knowing in advance which one your exporter will use prevents a situation where the car has arrived but the document needed to claim it has not.
Because the B/L effectively controls your vehicle, never let the original out of trusted hands and check every detail against your invoice the day it is issued. If anything is wrong, ask your exporter and the line to amend it before the vessel sails, as corrections after arrival are slow and sometimes costly.
