The best time of year to import a car from Japan

By ASTONISHING CARS CO., LTD · Updated 2026-06-06

Japanese car prices move through the year in fairly predictable ways, driven by auction supply, the fiscal calendar and currency. Understanding the pattern can help you buy at the right moment, though condition and exchange rate usually matter more than timing alone.

Auction supply typically swells around the Japanese fiscal year-end in February and March, as dealers and owners turn over stock before the new year. More cars at auction tends to mean more choice and softer prices, making late winter a favourable window for buyers.

The yen is the other major factor. Because you pay in foreign currency, a weaker yen makes Japanese stock cheaper in real terms, while a stronger yen raises your cost. Watching the exchange rate can matter as much as the season for your final price.

Freight conditions also vary, with surcharges and vessel availability shifting through the year and around peak shipping seasons. Building a little flexibility into your timing lets you take advantage of a soft auction or a favourable rate when it appears.

ASTONISHING CARS watches auction supply, freight and currency for clients and will advise when waiting is likely to save money and when it is not worth the delay. Tell us your target model and budget and we will time the search.
