Importing Japanese used cars to Europe: rules, costs and best buys
By ASTONISHING CARS CO., LTD · Updated 2026-05-20
European imports split into two groups: EU member states with strict type-approval and VAT rules, and markets like Cyprus, Malta, Ireland and Georgia where right-hand-drive Japanese stock is mainstream.
For EU mainland buyers, individual vehicle approval and emissions compliance drive most of the cost and effort. Hybrids such as the Toyota Aqua and Corolla Hybrid remain popular thanks to low running costs and easier compliance.
Right-hand-drive markets enjoy the widest selection and best value, since they buy Japanese domestic units without conversion. Kei cars and compact hybrids dominate demand there.
