Importing Japanese Cars to the UK: Process, Registration, IVA and Age Considerations
By ASTONISHING CARS CO., LTD · Updated 2026-01-22
The UK is a right-hand-drive market, which makes it a natural home for Japanese imports, but bringing a car in still involves several formal steps. In broad terms you notify the arrival of the vehicle, settle any duty and VAT due, complete the required technical approval, and then register the car so it can be taxed and driven.
Technical approval is where many importers focus their attention. Newer vehicles that were not type-approved for the UK market typically need an Individual Vehicle Approval, commonly called IVA, which checks the car against safety and environmental standards. Some older and historic vehicles follow a lighter path, and there are separate considerations for genuinely classic cars.
Customs treatment depends on where the car is shipped from and its status, so duty and VAT should be calculated case by case rather than assumed. Keeping the purchase invoice, shipping documents, and any export paperwork from Japan in order will make the customs and registration steps far smoother.
After approval and customs are cleared, the vehicle is registered with the licensing authority, which issues plates and a logbook. Because approval categories and tax treatment change over time, confirm the current process with the UK licensing and standards authorities, or a specialist import agent, before shipping.
