Left-Hand-Drive-Only Countries: A Guide to Sourcing Japanese Stock
By ASTONISHING CARS CO., LTD · Updated 2026-04-23
Most Japanese domestic stock is right-hand drive, which creates a sourcing challenge when a customer is in a left-hand-drive-only market. The first step is simply to confirm that the destination genuinely prohibits right-hand-drive registration rather than merely discouraging it, because that determines whether any Japanese-domestic car can be used at all.
Where right-hand drive is truly not permitted, there are still viable paths. Japan exports some left-hand-drive models, certain manufacturers produce left-hand-drive variants for other markets, and commercial or specialist vehicles are sometimes available in the required configuration. Matching the customer to genuinely left-hand-drive stock is far cleaner than attempting a conversion.
Conversion from right-hand to left-hand drive is technically possible but should be approached cautiously, because it is labour-intensive, can affect safety systems and resale value, and may not satisfy the destination's inspection authorities. For most export transactions it is better treated as a last resort than a default plan.
Because each country defines its drive-side and inspection rules differently, verify the destination's exact requirement and whether converted vehicles are accepted before sourcing. Confirm with the local transport authority or a registration agent so the vehicle you ship can actually be registered on arrival.
