Left-hand-drive Japanese cars: availability and options

By ASTONISHING CARS CO., LTD · Updated 2026-06-06

Because Japan drives on the left, almost all Japanese domestic used cars are right-hand drive. For left-hand-drive markets this raises an important question, since the steering side affects whether and how a Japanese car can be imported and registered.

Some left-hand-drive countries permit right-hand-drive imports with conditions, others restrict them, and a few require conversion to left-hand drive, which is costly and can affect safety approval and resale. Your national rule is the decisive factor, so confirm it before buying.

Genuine left-hand-drive Japanese cars do exist but are far scarcer, mostly export-specification models built for left-hand-drive markets rather than domestic stock. They command higher prices and a narrower choice than the vast right-hand-drive supply.

If your market accepts right-hand drive, you gain access to the full depth and value of the Japanese domestic auction supply with no conversion. If it requires left-hand drive, plan for either limited export-spec stock or the cost and approval implications of conversion.

ASTONISHING CARS helps you confirm your market's steering rule and find compliant stock, whether that means right-hand-drive domestic units or scarcer left-hand-drive export models, with a transparent CIF quote either way.
