Right-hand-drive JDM cars: what they are and which countries can import them
By ASTONISHING CARS CO., LTD · Updated 2026-06-05
JDM stands for Japanese Domestic Market, meaning a car originally built and sold for use inside Japan. Because Japan drives on the left side of the road, almost all JDM cars are right-hand drive, with the steering wheel on the right.
This matters for importers because a right-hand-drive country can buy Japanese domestic stock directly, with no expensive conversion. That is why East and Southern Africa, much of the Caribbean, and right-hand-drive island and European markets enjoy the widest, best-value selection of Japanese used cars.
Right-hand-drive markets that import JDM cars easily include Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and many others, plus Cyprus, Malta and Ireland in Europe. In these countries the car arrives ready to register, subject to age limits and inspection, which keeps total cost low.
Left-hand-drive countries can still import Japanese cars, but the steering position becomes the central question. Some allow right-hand-drive vehicles with restrictions; others require a conversion to left-hand drive, which is costly and can affect resale and safety approval. Always confirm your national rule before buying a right-hand-drive unit into a left-hand-drive market.
Age limits are the second decisive rule. Many markets cap imports at 8, 10, 12 or 15 years from first registration, and a few have no limit at all. A car that is perfect on paper is useless if it is one year too old to register, so the age limit should be your very first filter, ahead of model or price.
Our country guides set out the steering rule, age limit, main ports and required documents for each destination we serve. Check your country first, then browse stock that is already legal to import, and ASTONISHING CARS will handle inspection, documentation and shipping from there.
