Marine Insurance Claims for Shipped Cars: How to File One

By ASTONISHING CARS CO., LTD · Updated 2026-03-21

Marine insurance covers loss or damage to your vehicle while it is in transit by sea. Even with careful handling, cars can be scratched, dented, or affected by water or fire during a long voyage, so the cover is genuinely worthwhile. The key to a smooth claim is documentation gathered from the very start.

Before shipping, keep clear photographs of the vehicle's condition and retain your invoice, insurance certificate, and bill of lading. These establish the car's pre-voyage state and value. When you collect the car at the destination, inspect it carefully before signing for it, and note any visible damage on the delivery or release documents immediately.

If you find damage, report it to the insurer or their agent as soon as possible and within any time limit stated in the policy. Photograph the damage clearly, avoid making repairs before the insurer has a chance to assess it, and keep the vehicle available for survey. A delay or unauthorized repair can weaken an otherwise valid claim.

Read your policy so you know what is covered, what excess or deductible applies, and the deadlines for notification. Cover levels vary, so confirm the terms before the car ships rather than after. If anything is unclear, ask your insurer or forwarder to explain the claims procedure in writing.
