How to Import a Motorcycle from Japan: Shipping, Paperwork, and Tips
By ASTONISHING CARS CO., LTD · Updated 2026-05-02
Japan's motorcycle market is deep and well maintained, so importing a bike can be excellent value, but the process differs from cars in a few important ways. Many motorcycles are bought at the same auctions as cars and carry their own grade sheets, while smaller machines may come from dealers or wholesalers. Because a bike is far smaller than a car, it is almost always shipped crated and consolidated with other cargo rather than driven onto a vessel.
Crating is the heart of motorcycle shipping. The bike is strapped to a pallet or built into a wooden crate, sometimes with the front wheel or mirrors removed to save space, and fuel is typically drained for safety. Confirm with your exporter whether the price includes the crate and how the bike will be secured, since poor crating is the main cause of transit damage on two wheels.
Paperwork mirrors the car process but on a smaller scale. You will receive an export certificate and a bill of lading, and at destination you face the same customs duties, inspection, and registration steps, though many countries treat motorcycles under a separate and often lighter category. Engine displacement frequently determines the tax band and the licence class, so verify which bracket your bike falls into.
Before bidding, confirm the displacement, the title and export documents, and the crating method in writing, and check your country's rules for importing and registering a motorcycle of that size. A small bike with simple paperwork can be one of the easiest and most rewarding things to import from Japan when these basics are nailed down early.
